Projects

Below is a listing of some of the projects I am working on or have worked on. Several of these projects are ongoing, getting attention when I have the time.

BibleReaderME

BibleReaderME is a Java (J2ME) application designed for cell phones or other mobile devices with a J2ME JVM runtime environment, providing these devices access to the full text of the ESV Bible from Crossway Bibles.

RetroChallenge 2009 - “blue][ooth”

For the 2009 RetroChallenge, I attempted to develop an expansion card for my Apple //e which will allow me to use my Treo 650 as a dialup modem using Bluetooth. The plan was to recreate much of the original Apple Super Serial Card in a CPLD and add an embedded Bluetooth module to the mix. While I ran into a number of challenges with the Treo, I managed to complete a working Bluetooth adapter circuit and succeeded in initiating a DUN connection from my //e using a Sanyo Katana.

Ethernet Gameboy

This project involved providing an ethernet connection to my Gameboy Color using an embedded Java computer named TINI. This involved some simple circuit assembly and lots of Java and Z80 assembly code. This is perhaps the project I am most proud of. I really hope to have some time in the future to do some more with it.

GBSimpleTerm

GBSimpleTerm is an application I developed for the Color Gameboy using Z80 assembly language. Currently, it is just a nice user interface intended to be married with the communications code from the Ethernet Gameboy project above. Perhaps when I get some more free time I’ll finish this up. :) This page also describes some other video game development I am interested in along
with some useful links.

Painted Laptops

I enjoy painting computers. This page shows the pieces of art I’ve made out of older laptops. Also included is information regarding using DOS on an older 486 laptop. This information describes how I used a Cisco Aironet 350 wireless card and Cisco’s DOS packet driver to get TCP/IP access under DOS. I was able to browse the web and use SSH (v.1) all under DOS!

Macintosh

This page describes my interest in Apple’s Macintosh computers. It lists the Macs I own or have owned. It also provides some (perhaps) useful information for those interested in running OS X on older Macs. I describe in detail what was required to get OS X running on my PowerComputing PowerWave 604/132. Included are screenshots and benchmarks.

Sun Microsystems

My Sun page just describes a little about my experience and appreciation for Sun hardware (and software, I suppose). Not much here.

QNX

I am an Operating System fiend, so I will install and play with just about any OS that looks interesting. I began playing with QNX in college and was really impressed. This is a page I started to describe my experience with QNX, but I haven’t used it much lately, so the page is a bit outdated.

Freevo Box

This project describes the entertainment machine I put together using a Mini-ITX computer running Freevo on Slackware Linux.
